Here's how to CRUSH summer BBQs...

Without missing out on the brownies

BBQ Season…

It’s a love-hate relationship isn’t it?

On the one hand, nothing beats a burger and a beer in the sun with your mates, not a care in the world, in the proper British summer

On the other hand, it can be SO hard to navigate what to eat, and leave without feeling stuffed and awful about yourself.

Trust me, I’ve been there for years on end.

It feels like a free for all - so many picky bits to snack on, bowls of crisps that lead to absent minded handfuls, and constantly going back to the table for more.

Which often leads to overeating, without even really noticing!

But you don’t want to be the one that says ‘oh I can’t, I’m on a diet’ or miss out on Claire’s UNREAL brownies…

I get it.

It can feel very overwhelming.

But it doesn’t have to be.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with going out and eating more food than you normally would on a day to day basis.

The worse thing you can do is stress about it.

And realistically what is stressing going to do?

It’s not going to change anything.

BBQ’s don’t have to be the dark cloud looming over your summer - there IS a way to enjoy them, and still stay on track.

So here are 5 tips for crushing your next bbq:

  1. Make sure you eat as normal throughout the day. Starving yourself before so you can ‘save more calories for later’ is a one way ticket to disaster. Eat your breakfast as normal, and treat the bbq like it’s your next meal, rather than a free for all feast.

  2. Keep your water intake HIGH. This goes without saying but water is your best friend, especially in the summer time. Not only will it keep you hydrated, but it allows you to make more rational decisions about what you want to eat. When we’re dehydrated we crave sugary, salty, fatty foods - and whilst there’s nothing wrong with that, you want to eat it because you want it, not because your body is begging for water!

  3. Consume lean protein sources, chicken, fish and low fat beef burgers. Start your bbq plate with meat and build around it - protein is what keeps us satiated and full so starting here means not only will be be satisfied, but honouring what our body wants and needs, and leaving space for the other bits in moderation too.

  4. Keep grazing to a minimum. iTry to build an actual plate of food rather than nabbing as you walk past. That way it’s a lot easier to know what you’re eating, and what you need, rather than trying to guess and feeling guilty when you get home. The bbq table isn’t going anywhere, so no need to rush.

  5. Enjoy yourself! Life’s too short to constantly be worrying about what you’re eating, or who’s watching you at the BBQ. Make decisions to the best of your ability, honour your body, and make room for the bits you love. It’ll help you lead a happy, healthy life and build a better relationship not only with food, but with your body too.
